Keybreeze is a great Windows equivalent to Quicksilver. You should check it out. I actually prefer it more than Quicksilver for a couple of reasons: it uses the semicolon hotkey for faster access (you can change to Alt + Space if you don't like it), it has a lot more features, and the autocomplete and navigation is much simpler and easier. You don't have to press the Tab key every so often to access different features like you do in Quicksilver.

I dislike auto-launch, so I've disabled it wherever possible (I try to keep my desktop free of shortcuts and documents and such, too). Even so, every time I fire up my computer I manually launch my e-mail client, Skype, Gaim/Pidgin, Firefox and (depending on whether I'm using Linux or Windows) either Konsole and TinyFugue or SimpleMu. None of the applications are set to auto-launch, but it's so much a part of my routine that they might as well be.

I think I need to start approaching that startup a little differently if I'm to be more productive and/or creative when I'm at my home computer (the work laptop is another story entirely). I'm not launching those apps because I need them running to complete a task; in fact, most of them provide just the sort of distractions that result in those "Whoops! It's 11pm already!" moments.

Still, there's a desire to be pseudo-social when that Internet connection exists. Launching Skype gives me the opportunity to talk to folks like Rae Lamond or The Kingfish or (gasp!) even you. Ditto for Gaim and a bunch of other friends; TinyFugue/SimpleMu gets me to Bob and Wesley.

That's all well and good, if the folks I enjoy talking to are there (well, there in that virtual sense). If there's no one around, Skype and Gaim and their ilk become an anchor chain; every three minutes or so I have to cycle through those applications to see if anyone I regularly chat with has come on line in the past 180 seconds.

Can you hear me now?

Sad, really. Twitter is the same way; ditto for Google Reader and my own forums and so on and so on. The sad reality is that when I realize it's 11pm (or 1am), I've just spent the past two or three hours doing the Internet equivalent of channel surfing when there's nothing on TV.

Some of the stuff you're saying sounds familiar...This book: http://tinyurl.com/yq3rys does a great job of giving very doable organizational tips.... ignore the title, or just understand that the Intarweb causes "conditional partial attention disorder" and go with it :) - but you are right on target with this, in my opinion.
