Cleveland Rocks?

After spending 10 days in Santa Monica, the following info makes perfect sense to me.

Bizjournals.com looked at 50 U.S. cities to determine the most stressful metropolitan areas. Cleveland is No. 2 on the list; only Detroit is a more stressful place to live, based on factors ranging from finances and unemployment to traffic, crime and pollution….Of the 50 cities, Cleveland ranks 40th or worst in categories including percentage of possible sunshine; robberies per 100,000 residents; unemployment rate; rate of per capita income growth; and circulatory deaths per 100,000.
from Crain’s Cleveland Business: Take a deep breath

On this last trip, Cathy was able to make the trip to L.A. with me. 75 degrees and sunny. People out walking around and enjoying themselves. Places nearby that are open later than 10pm. I’d be lying if I said we were looking forward to coming home to Cleveland.

I’m trying. I’m really trying to love our grey city. Really I am.

  1. I’m not native born. That means that I don’t have the bred in need to slight North East Ohio that comes with birth proximity to Youngstown. I look at Ohio and I see how much more vibrant the economy is compared to Western Pennsylvania and I think that half the problem is the gloom that is on the tip of everyone’s tongues constantly.

However, I did attend a conference in Cleveland this year and I was quite embarrassed by the way things were kept. Every place has homeless but most cities don’t allow piles of human excrement and tp to be left outside of the entrance to the convention center for several days. I also realize that pigeons die and don’t simply instantly disappear, but combine that and the last and the street next to the convention center being completely torn up and all the stores closed, I was embarrassed of the big city I now look north to as the star city for my area.

It shouldn’t be and Cleveland won’t improve until people do what is needed to get the stuff done. And yes, I raised a stink, if you will, about the messes till they were resolved. Most stuff I just would clean up myself as part of civil duty but ok I admit somethings I prefer to bring to the attention of others…

  2. And no, that wasn’t the only pile with toilet paper that was laying around…. I’d not ever seen that in San Diego, San Fran, Vegas, Baltimore, Louisville, Long Beach, Nashville, Pittsburgh or any of the other convention centers I’ve been to.

  3. There was a time I would have said “come North (and a bit West)”. But now Michigan is mired in economic woes so maybe not.
