Linux Admin Books?
Earlier today, I tweeted a question to anyone following me on twitter. “Looking for a good book on Linux Administration: Any suggestions?” Thankfully, the Linux Journal (follow here) picked up my plaintive cry and re-tweeted me to their entire following. Here are the recommendations I received:
- Linux in a Nutshell, Fifth Edition (from minitotoro and chigh): this one is pretty good although a little bit dated
- Linux Complete Command Reference (via TheeCodePoet): has saved my life more times than I can count.
- Linux Administration Handbook (2nd Edition) (via xtine and jtollert): Both said this was a good one, and a great help.
I’m also looking at Linux System Administration, First Edition from O’Reilly. So far, they’ve never let me down.
Any input from you folks? What should I be reading to better understand Linux?

I used to like the Essential System Administration book, but it’s even more dated than the Nutshell book. And its scope is a little larger than you need since it covers things like Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and others IIRC.
It all depends upon what you’re needing out of the book. Just a reference guide or a how-to?

More of a How-To, I think.

Might I suggest that you try Sidux. Or puppy linux, on a usb stick to sort a get a feel for some of it. But I think you’re trying to look at things from a network server point of view. And that, I’m not much help with. I do have a computer that I could loan you that you could load things onto to play with. I’m curious to figure these things out also, but my real life isn’t a SysAdmin at this time. Tho’ I’d would welcome the change. – Email me Chris, if you’re interested. I’m only in town (Elyria) for a few days. – I still have that Kilroy Linux disk floating around somewhere too..
