Moving to L.A: Day Two on the Road

The second day on the road was much smoother. We decided that the minivan with my wife, my mother-in-law, and kids in it should drive on it’s own, and my father-in-law and I would follow along in his car and the truck. This gave the minivan the ability to stop whenever it needed. Since the truck is slower than the pace of the minivan, it meant that when they were done with their stops, generally we would catch up with them. Instead of twelve hours on the road, we only had eight, which was wonderful.

Got through all of Half Share today while driving, and once again, I was loving the book. Half Share spends more time in the inner lives of the characters, and also on the interpersonal relationships. It was some of the most realistic writing I’ve read in a long time; Nathan Lowell captures the emotions of the moment exquisitely1 . I’m very curious to know what’s waiting for me in Full Share, but I’m putting off listening until we are driving again.

We’re stopped in Bartlesville Oklahoma for a three day stop. This is where my father-in-law’s family lives, so we’re taking the opportunity to visit them and see the sights. I’m working during the days, but will be catching up with them after hours. We’ll be leaving Thursday morning for Tucumcari, New Mexico.

  1. There is a seduction scene in the latter half of the book that took my breath away.[back]

  1. Tucumcari almost sounds like one of those placenames that would send a high school sophomore geography class into a flurry of titters and giggles. Yeah. I’m looking at you, Lake Titicaca.

Glad to hear your travels are proceeding as planned. Northeast Ohio has not yet been consumed by flames in your absence, but we’ve had a couple of close calls.

  2. I’ve never been to Oklahoma! Be sure to post all about it.

I admire your ability to listen to books on tape. When I listen to audio like that, it very quickly becomes “Charlie Brown Teacher Voice”. I can listen to NPR, but not books on tape; not sure why.

  3. Kris: If Cleveland has not been consumed by flames, it’s because the countdown is not complete yet. Just wait for it.

Nicole: Will do. I’m hoping to get out to Wollaroc This week, if I can.

  4. Glad you’re posting the trip out. With the aid of G-Maps, I can pretend we’re along for the ride, without the pesky need to sit in a car for hours on end. I may be stuck at a desk for about the same amount of time, but at least I can get up to pee whenever I want.

  5. Ah, Oklahoma. A nice place to be FROM, if you know what I mean.

But you’re just not headed for Tucumcari, you’ll be headed out for TUCUMCARI TONIGHT! It’ll make sense once you hit the Texas panhandle.

Nicole: Maybe you should try again now that books have moved off “tape”. :) Chris is listening to some downloadable audiobooks, many of which are a far cry from the dry, boring reads of old. Still may not be your thing, but you may find some to your liking.

  7. Oh, hey, speaking of MHQ, keep those plans to annex Mahalo Headquarters on the down-low, okay? No need to ruffle Calacanis’ feathers just yeat.

  8. “Just yeat”? Sweet potato pie, but I can’t type today!

  9. Oh, one last thing regarding Bartlesville: I’m not at all surprised that Google Maps has no street view available. Maybe when Google gets off their collective lazy ass and implements a “dirt road view” we’ll be able to have a look around the place.
